Wall Art for Your Space
When it comes to transforming your living space with art, the size of the artwork plays a crucial role. At Paintslab, we understand that finding the perfect-sized piece can be a bit overwhelming. That's why we've put together a simple guide to help you select the ideal dimensions for your wall art.
Proportion is Key
Have you ever seen a piece of art that seems either too small or too large for its surroundings? Getting the proportion right is essential for creating a balanced and harmonious look in your space.
Designers often recommend that artwork should occupy 65–70% of the available wall space. However, leaving this to chance isn't ideal. That's where our easy calculation comes into play.
Start by measuring the width of the empty wall space and multiply that number by 0.65. For instance, if your wall spans 75 inches, the equation is 75 x 0.65 = 48.75 inches, which is approximately 4 feet. This means your perfect piece of art should be around 4 feet wide.
Repeat the same calculation for the height of your blank wall area. For example, if it's 35 inches tall, 35 x 0.65 = 22.75 inches, or roughly 2 feet high. So, your ideal piece of art would be about 2 feet high.
With these dimensions in mind (4’ x 2’ in our example), you've found the perfect size for your future artwork!
When in Doubt, Go Bigger
If you're torn between two sizes, it's generally better to choose the larger piece. A bigger artwork often makes a more impactful statement and complements your space beautifully.
Single Piece or a Set?
While a singular piece of art can create a timeless focal point, sets can also be incredibly captivating. If you opt for a set of two or three art pieces, remember to consider the spacing between them. Experts recommend leaving 2–5 inches from the edge of each piece. The proportional calculation remains relevant for sets, but ensure to include the spacing in your overall measurements.
Visualize Your Dimensions
Many homeowners like to get a sense of how their wall art will look before making a final decision. A fantastic way to do this is by creating a mock-up using newsprint, kraft paper, or even wrapping paper. Simply cut out the dimensions of the artwork and tape it to the wall space where it will be displayed. This visualization technique can be immensely helpful in making your final selection.
Choosing the right-sized wall art for your space need not be a daunting task. With these guidelines from Paintslab, you can confidently enhance your living area with the perfect piece of art that complements your style and space. Happy decorating!
